On day 2, Young Sphinx destroys this Matching Fractions game! During his computer lab time, he played a number of games related to equivalent fractions. See our past blog entry for links to some awesome fractions games. There is nothing like teaching fractions visually. Way to go, Young Sphinx!!

We are venturing into the next step of our fractions journey and learning about equivalent fractions. I thought mt man would have a hard time with this but he is catching on like a champ. The use of visuals helped tremendously. I found an image that had circle fractions and saved it on our iPad. Using the DoodleBuddy app, I turned that same image into a background. This let Young Sphinx color in the pieces as needed so that he could see the comparisons side by side. By the end of his worksheet, he was very confidence in his new found knowledge. Below is the lesson that we did together using the ShowMe app.
Doing a routine Craigslist search led to Hawkins Academy helping children all the way in Africa!
The Cheka School is a pre-primary school in northern Tanzania that provides free education for children from poor families who would otherwise be unable to afford to send their children to school. Their mission is to support Kongwa, Tanzania and all over Africa by providing high-caliber education to students in the community. Cheka needs our help, not just financially but with books and supplies that could mean a world of difference to a child in a less-than-stellar environment. If you can mail 10 pounds of books to the brother, Ahmed, for less than $10.00 and change a child’s life, why wouldn’t you?
6 boxes of books on their way to Cheka from Hawkins Academy and it feels great!!
IMPORTANT UPDATE: If you do an online search for Cheka Foundation, you may come across one that is a Dutch organization. THIS IS NOT THE SAME CHEKA FOUNDATION as the one endorsed by Hawkins Academy. Please share this link for Cheka: http://chekafoundation.org.

So I’m creating a lit unit for my daughter and came across The Core Knowledge Anthology of African-American Literature, Music, and Art. Within this lesson plan are listed some African folk tales and stories for various grade levels. Below are links where you can find each of those stories online or for purchase. What’s cool about this ‘lesson plan’ is it’s completely customizable if you are in a hurry and down want to wait for your purchased books to arrive, you can use other tales in place of the purchased ones. Now of course you couldn’t use the answer keys provided, but you get the drift. Enjoy!!

We took 5 common items (salt, pepper, sugar, powdered chocolate, and beach sand) and attempted to dissolve them in both hot and cold water.
After putting 1 teaspoon of each in cold water, we learned that powdered chocolate dissolves in cold water the best of the 5 things we tested.
It was Young Sphinx’s turn to be the observer.
After using hot water to test solubility, we learned that salt, sugar, and hot chocolate all dissolve in hot water quicker than in cold water.
